Two physical therapists worked full-time in a hospital and operated their own practice on the side for two years. The early goal of the company was to specialize in providing services to patients with neck and back problems.
“We wanted to focus on that group of patients because they seemed to get lost or ignored,” they explain. “Neck and back injuries are harder to prove, especially in workers’ compensation cases. We wanted to give patients a higher level of care so that they could return to work much quicker.” Dale J. Cordial, PT, Co-Founder and CEO/President.
In 1980, the therapists devoted their efforts to their side business on a full-time basis and opened an office in Greensburg. From that point on growth was constant. Between 1984 and 1993, THE pt GROUP expanded to include practices in Mount Pleasant, New Alexandria, Irwin, Penn Hills, McKeesport and Murrysville, adding partners Steven J. Teitel, Robert E. Brett, and Joseph R. Chrillo. In 2007, Kristen Tompkins-Sepesky and Walt Henry were added as partners.
THE pt GROUP also provides individualized, on-site training. On-site safety and wellness centers can be set up as well as individually designed education programs for industries.
Many other specialized programs were developed over the years, including balance therapy. Balance Therapy involves physical therapy where specially trained therapists evaluate and treat individuals with dizziness, balance, or other neurological problems. State-of-the-art evaluation techniques help the therapist design an individual program to address each client’s specific needs.
Cardiac conditioning programs were developed to help clients for general strengthening/stretching exercises with home exercise programs for de-conditioned clients.
Cancer rehabilitation programs were developed for patients after surgery, chemotherapy, and /or radiation to improve edema, balance and overall debility.
Walt Henry, Director of Marketing, Development, Partner for THE pt GROUP, says that the company is very active in other areas of the healthcare field and is involved in the communities in which it has offices through the Arthritis Foundation, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. He points out THE pt GROUP is very active in workers’ compensation reform and that the practice belongs to many separate chambers of commerce, helping keep employers and employees in the area.

Playing the game of healthcare has become increasingly difficult in the last decade. The rules are constantly changing and the playing field is never the same. But one western Pennsylvania health care provider is proving that you can stay in the game and sometimes even win.
THE pt GROUP, led by Dale J. Cordial, PT, Co-Founder and CEO/President, provides acute physical therapy for work, motor vehicle, sports, general orthopedic injuries and neurological/balance disorders. “Neck and back injuries are harder to prove, especially in workers’ compensation cases. We wanted to give patients a higher level of care so that they could return to work much quicker.” Cordial says the secret to his company’s success is simply “giving a very high level of care at a reasonable cost.”
THE pt GROUP, besides acute physical therapy, has developed Balance Therapy. The company has nearly 20 locations in Allegheny, Armstrong, Fayette, and Westmoreland counties.
“In the last 35 years, the healthcare field has really changed.” Cordial says. “We are very proud of the fact that in a market of managed care, we have not had to change the quality of our care. We have continued to get more efficient so that we can maintain our standards without having to change our clinical philosophy in any way.”
